Focusing on Adult Learners in Postsecondary Education: Responding to the Challenge in a New Age
In October 2011, Lumina Foundation and the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) convened a meeting focused on how to transform higher education to serve adult learners most effectively in the 21st century. A diverse group of postsecondary leaders, accreditors, employers, policy makers, and adult learning advocates worked together to outline priorities for ensuring adult academic and career success in a time of resource constraints in higher education. This action-oriented convening started with questions related to serving adult learners better and progressed to a discussion of specific steps needed in order to respond to the challenges of a new age. FAFSA Pilot Site Convening
In partnership with the US Department of Education, Lumina Foundation convened over 100 high school teachers, counselors and administrators in late September 2011. This group of representatives from 18 sites participating in the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Tracking Pilot Program came together to analyze data, learn about the implementation processes and procedures associated with the pilot, and share best practices. Common Core State Standards: "It's About Improving Education for All Americans. Bottom Line."
In 2010, the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers initiated the Common Core State Standards effort, and by the end of last year, a majority of states agreed to set college- and career-ready standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics and develop assessment systems that gauge student progress. This effort represents a historic opportunity to align K-12 and postsecondary education, and in particular, to drive student preparation for college. More »
Lumina National Productivity Conference 2011
Lawmakers and higher education leaders from seventeen states came together in Indianapolis to learn how to identify and tell the stories about productivity work in higher education and share how states and institutions can replicate the promising aspects of productivity work. Higher education productivity teams from Arizona, California, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia attended the conference.
