News ReleaseFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEAugust 01, 2002 John M. Mutz elected Lumina Foundation's chairman of the board INDIANAPOLIS — Lumina Foundation for Education 's board of directors has elected John M. Mutz as its second chairman. Mutz succeeds Edward A. McCabe, who was elected founding chairman when the Indianapolis-based private foundation formed on August 1, 2000. At that time, McCabe announced that he intended to serve two years as the Foundation's chairman. "The two-year tenure was my plan from the outset," said McCabe. "And it's easy for me to step aside, knowing that someone of John's skill and experience is there to move into the chairman's position." After Mutz assumes the chairmanship, McCabe will continue to serve on the Foundation's board. "John's combined experience in philanthropy, business and government makes him an ideal choice to lead Lumina Foundation," said Martha D. Lamkin, president and CEO of the Foundation, which strives to help people achieve their potential by expanding access to an education beyond high school. "John has been instrumental in the Foundation's evolution. With his experience and vision, John will challenge us to achieve our mission of improving higher education access and success at a national level." Mutz was elected vice chairman of Lumina Foundation for Education, Inc., on July 31, 2000. For the past two years, he has led the Foundation's grant-making program as chairman of its Program Policy Committee and as a member of its Executive Committee. As one of the nation's 60 largest private foundations, with assets approaching $1 billion, the Foundation's charitable program eventually will total between $45 million and $50 million per year. Mutz has extensive leadership experience in all three sectors: corporate, nonprofit and government. He is the retired president and former vice chairman of PSI Energy, Inc., Indiana's largest electric utility. He was president of Lilly Endowment for four years and served two terms as Indiana's lieutenant governor. In accepting his assignment, Mutz said, "I am fortunate to have learned from the leadership of Ed McCabe, who has devoted more than four decades of his life's work to helping students go to college. I am excited by this opportunity because I believe that Lumina Foundation's mission of expanding access to an education beyond high school remains the key to a better life for all." Mutz also chairs the Indianapolis Water Board, which oversees the Indianapolis Water Company, and he serves on the boards of National City Bank of Indiana, Walker Information, Sargent and Greenleaf, Conseco, the Hudson Institute and the Advisory Board of CID Equity Partners. Mutz and his wife, Carolyn, live in Indianapolis. They have one son, one daughter and five grandchildren.
