INDIANAPOLIS—Lumina Foundation for Education announced today the election of Joe Loughrey to the Foundation’s board of directors. Loughrey, who has been vice chairman of Cummins Inc. since August 2008, will retire from that position at the end of this month. Prior to taking that role, Loughrey had been president and chief operating officer at Cummins since 2005. He also has held numerous other leadership positions at the Columbus-based company during his 35-year career.
“Loughrey brings tenured experience from the corporate world that will help Lumina keenly identify workforce development needs and their relationship with higher education,” said John M. Mutz, chairman of Lumina’s board. “Higher education must partner with businesses and industry as we identify, target and develop key strategies to prepare more Americans with the skills and education they need—and America needs—to succeed,” said Mutz.
Along with his responsibilities at Cummins, Loughrey serves on the board of trustees of The Manufacturing Institute, the educational arm of the National Association of Manufacturers, on whose board he also sits. He is also chairman of Conexus Indiana, an organization dedicated to promoting advanced manufacturing and logistics in Indiana. Loughrey also serves on the boards of Sauer-Danfoss Inc., the Community Education Coalition in Columbus, Ind. and Hillenbrand, Inc.
Loughrey earned an undergraduate degree in economics and African studies from the University of Notre Dame, where he is now vice chairman of the Advisory Council for the College of Arts & Letters. He received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2008 and was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Gov. Mitch Daniels. In 2007, he was given the achievement award for business by the Ireland Chamber of Commerce in the U.S.
