ACCESS: PUBLIC POLICY
National report card shows fewer can afford college
High school graduates are better prepared for college, but those gains have not translated into strong gains in the rate of college participation and completion, according to Measuring Up 2004: The National Report Card on Higher Education. The report also lowered America's grade on affordability from a "D" to an "F." Download the PDF.

ACCESS: ENCOURAGEMENT
Raising college aspirations and academic preparedness

SUCCESS: COLLEGE COMPLETION RATES
Pell Institute reports on student retention and graduation
Many students who begin postsecondary education drop out before completing a degree. Graduation rates vary considerably among types of institutions and types of students. Pell Institute Senior Scholar Vincent Tinto has prepared a broad survey of what is known about why students leave college before completing their program of study.  Read Student Retention and Graduation: Facing the Truth, Living with the Consequences (PDF).

ACCESS: INSTITUTIONAL TRENDS
NCES issues report on financial aid, HBCUs
Tuition increases and the broader availability of student loans were the major driving forces of change in undergraduate student financing during the 1990s, according to a National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) report. More...  Another new NCES report on historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) shows that 2 percent of all college students were enrolled in HBCUs in 2001. More...

ACCESS: COMMUNICATION
PBS stations to air college access series
The College Track is a three-part documentary television series that will present the stories of students, parents, teachers and community organizations that are expanding our notion of who is "college material." In conjunction with the soon-to-be-scheduled PBS broadcast, local organizations committed to improving college access will participate in a national outreach campaign. View air dates.

New report examines changes in the college-choice process
The process of choosing a college has significantly changed over the past 50 years. ACCESS: RESEARCH, PRACTICE & POLICY
Rigorous research to improve low-performing schools
What do we already know about how well high school reform approaches work, and how can educators best use research to inform practice and policy? Earlier this year, MDRC convened researchers, policy-makers and practitioners to discuss the use of rigorous, evidence-based research as a tool for answering questions about how to improve low-performing high schools. MDRC has just released findings and conclusions (PDF) from this high school conference.
