COMMUNITY COLLEGE PROFILE
Remarkable results: LaGuardia Community College
Two-thirds of LaGuardia Community College students were born outside the United States. Many students are the first in their family to attend college, and most come from families with an average annual income of $26,400. Yet 60 percent of LaGuardia's students go on to four-year schools. What is the secret of LaGuardia's success? More ...

Recommendations include making college-preparatory curriculum the standard for all students and providing early financial aid commitments, assuring students support if they take steps to prepare for college.  More...

HISPANIC COLLEGE ENROLLMENT
Latino undergraduates: college enrollment trends
Hispanic college students often attend college in a manner that makes it more difficult for them to attain their educational goals. For example, among young undergraduates at two-year colleges, 61 percent of Latinos attend full time; for whites the figure is 74 percent. Learn more about Hispanic college enrollment from a national survey by the Pew Hispanic Center and the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation.

ACCESS: PREPARATION
High school diploma is not a good yardstick
The high school diploma has little meaning in determining whether a student is ready for college or the workplace, according to a report released by an alliance of education groups. Read the full report, prepared by the American Diploma Project, and view the benchmarks.

State Financial Strategies
The buying power of the federal Pell grant has dropped sharply as college costs have increased, reducing college access for lower-income students. Expanding College Access: The Impact of State Finance Strategies, a Lumina Foundation research report, explores the impact of state finance strategies on college enrollment. Review a summary of the report.

How states link financial aid to employment
In 2001-2002, more than 40 states supported "loan forgiveness" or "loan repayment" programs in an effort to provide financial aid and/or alleviate workplace shortages. Workforce Contingent Financial Aid says the programs' effectiveness is not well understood. This report was published by the American Institutes for Research in partnership with Lumina Foundation.
