Nursing shortages are forcing hospitals to close beds, hire temporary nurses at great expense to fill the gap and possibly provide less than optimal care to patients. The problem is not just that people aren’t going into nursing, but also that existing nurses aren’t going into education.

Colleges Battle FAFSA Obstacles

While high schools usually provide informational sessions on filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to seniors, older nontraditional students who comprise a sizeable number of community college enrollments tend to fall through the cracks. As a result, many community colleges make an extra effort to reach them at places like community centers, libraries and work.

A new, three-year initiative by the American Council on Education will examine gaps and progress in educational attainment for underrepresented students. A “cornerstone” of the project will be the creation of a digital platform—a micro-site—that will serve as a “portfolio of work” and as a “launch-point” to larger conversations around access and support for underrepresented students in their higher education pursuits.
