Some state efforts to increase college readiness and completion are being undermined by policies that perpetuate the status quo in high school counseling, according to a report by the Education Commission of the States. The report offers several low-cost, high-impact strategies for improvement, including low student/counselor ratios and better support for counselors; three-minute videos on college costs, financial aid and the benefits of attending college; and asking parents to sign off on their child’s college/career plan.
