The number of undergraduates who use private student loans to help pay for their postsecondary education has declined from 14 percent in 2008 to 6 percent in 2012, according to a report from the National Center for Education Statistics. In contrast, borrowing from the federal government through the Stafford Loan Program increased from 35 percent to 40 percent.
