Searching for Accountability in Higher Education

Driven by concerns over cost, quality, and overall value, accountability in higher education is an area of growing interest among policymakers and stakeholders, but also one of considerable ambiguity and debate. This report contends an overhaul of the federal government’s framework for holding colleges and universities accountable is desperately needed. The idea is not to punish, the report says, but rather to drive system-wide improvement while weeding out the worst performers to protect federal investments in student aid, and by extent, students, families, and taxpayers.
