A report from the Association of American Colleges & Universities represents an attempt to develop a large-scale model for assessing student learning across institutions that goes beyond tests and grades. The study, which incorporates results from the first two years of AAC&U’s national Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education (VALUE) initiative, focuses on three key learning outcomes—Critical Thinking, Written Communication, and Quantitative Literacy—that educators, employers, and policy makers believe are essential for student success in the workplace and in life.
