James Martin, S.J., is a Jesuit priest, editor at large of America Magazine, consultor to the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication, and author of many books, including the New York Times bestsellers “The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything,” “Jesus: A Pilgrimage” and, most recently, “Learning to Pray.”

Jamie Merisotis is a leader in philanthropy, education, and public policy. Since 2008, he has served as the president and CEO of Lumina Foundation. In ‘Human Work in the Age of Smart Machines,’ he argues that we can—and must—rise to the challenges presented by automation and artificial intelligence by preparing to work alongside smart machines doing that which only humans can: thinking critically, reasoning ethically, interacting interpersonally, and serving others with empathy.
