New research suggests that high-achieving, low-income students who received targeted admissions materials are more likely to apply, be admitted to, and enroll in a top-tier university. The study paper describes an experiment to reach out to potential applicants to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Researchers found that after telling high-achieving, low-income students they should apply to the institution, many of them did.
