Despite Americans’ overwhelming belief in the value of education after high school, many students find the path to and through college too complex, challenging, and costly. This is especially true for students of color, low-income students, and those who are the first in their family to attend college.

This report outlines five broad themes that colleges and universities say make a significant difference in increasing student success in college and eliminating attainment gaps. The key ingredients include having a student-centered mission, the use of data to inform decision-making, and establishing goals and milestones as a form of accountability.
