Student loan default is essentially “unrelated” to the amount borrowed, according to a report from Dēmos. Borrowers with the smallest balances—those with less than $10,000 in student debt—defaulted on their student loans at almost the exact same rate as borrowers with the largest balances of more than $100,000 in debt. The report says borrowers’ default rates were 13 percent and 14 percent, respectively.
