Michael L. Smith was elected to Lumina Foundation’s board in April 2006, and serves as Lumina’s Chair of the Investment Committee. He served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Anthem, Inc. and its subsidiaries, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
As a native Hoosier, Michael L. Smith graduated from DePauw University in 1970. With a passion for education, Mike has extended himself throughout his professional career and his personal life to help others recognize their potential and to work to accomplish their dreams.
Smith’s business career of more than forty years began in the Indianapolis office of Arthur Andersen & Company. Smith moved on to Mayflower Group, Inc. a worldwide relocation service that also provided school and public transportation in 30 states, where he worked through the ranks to serve as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. Following his twenty-year tenure at Mayflower Group, Smith joined Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield serving as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Smith was with Anthem from 1996 until his retirement in 2005. In 2008 he co-founded Cardinal Equity Partners, a mid-market private equity investment fund headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Smith has served in leadership roles of numerous charitable and civic organizations promoting education for all Hoosiers. He is currently serving on the Board of Trustees of DePauw University and the board of the Lumina Foundation and is a past Chairman of the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. Smith is involved with Shepherd Community Center, College Mentors for Kids, School on Wheels and the YMCA. In 2010, Smith was inducted into the Indiana Academy on its 40th anniversary for a lifetime of achievement and contributions to the cultural, scientific, literary, civic, religious and educational development of Indiana.
In addition, Smith lends his business acumen to many organizations in the for-profit arena serving on the Board of Directors of: Kite Realty Group Trust, Emergency Medical Services Corp, Inc, Vectren Corporation, HH Gregg, Inc, LDI Ltd., Lockton, Inc., Carestream Health, Inc., and Hulman & Company.
Michael L. Smith lives in Carmel with his wife Sue. They have two children and nine grandchildren.
