Many Share Ideas for Improving the Clarity of the Card
INDIANAPOLIS–InnoCentive and Lumina Foundation today announced two winners of a College Scorecard Design Challenge focused on building upon the College Scorecard released by The White House last February. More than 390 submissions were received, Lumina’s team reviewed the top 50, and organizers hope the best suggestions are considered as future iterations of the Scorecard are developed.
Jillian Klein of Capella University was awarded $7,500 of the $10,000 prize for her design submission. Klein offered many layers of institutional comparisons including: popular majors, career upon graduation and forecasted “break even” dates. Klein’s design also illustrated measures that would make a college comparison tool more student-centric such as creating individual student profiles and including college iconography throughout the platform.
Rachel Fishman and Ross Van der Linde of New America Foundation were awarded $2,500 of the $10,000 prize for their submission. Fishman and Van der Linde’s platform focused on a simple, accessible design that could guide students regardless of their prior level of understanding regarding the college application process. Their submission also highlighted ways for students to learn more about income-based repayment information, acceptance rates and test score information.
“The feedback we received from college access professionals and students indicates that useful tools offer contextualized information,” said Zakiya Smith, strategy director at Lumina Foundation. “Students and families need signals to know how to interpret things like graduation rates, financial aid statistics, and other outcome information. Both of these designs suggested ways to make the data relevant for the 21st century student.”
The Administration issued its first College Scorecard earlier this year as a way to help students compare information on colleges and universities. The goal of the College Scorecard Design Challenge was to capture new perspectives that could be used for the next iteration of the College Scorecard. The Challenge sought mock-ups for improved user experiences, with a particular focus on financial statistics and financial aid information since those areas have been difficult to communicate across a broad spectrum of users seeking college information.
“The two winning designs were selected due to their clarity of information, comparison features, opportunities for search personalization and use of data,” said Smith. “Both of the winning submissions were also visually appealing.”
Lumina also gathered compelling ideas from many of the other designs submitted in the Challenge. Concepts of note include prominently featuring the average earnings of graduates, increasing the number of colleges available for student consideration and building in net price comparisons broken down by income. Most of the top submissions also made a compelling case for a college navigator to be integrated into future versions of the Scorecard.>
