A group of researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign says more research is needed to accurately estimate the number of college students facing food insecurity and hunger, as awareness of the problem grows and lawmakers and colleges grapple with it.

New research shows that free college initiatives are much more effective when accompanied by non-tuition financial incentives and other support.

In Detroit, for example, retention, full-time enrollment, and credit accumulation improved significantly when students in the Detroit Promise free college program were offered a $50 monthly stipend via gift card in exchange for meeting with coaches, as well as encouragement to take summer classes or participate in a summer jobs program.

What if a college could triple its graduation rate, shorten the time to degree completion, and boost enrollment simply by using data more effectively? Georgia State University has made it happen with a program called GPS Advising. 

The name, short for Graduation Progression Success, echoes the navigational tool on purpose. As soon as students make a wrong turn, the system’s already recalibrating to get them back on the right path.
