In Strong Retail Economy and Tight Labor Market, Retailers Tout Incentives

While bonuses may get candidates in the door, some retailers are testing incentives to support workers over the long term. Lowe's, the home improvement retailer, recently started a workforce development program called "Track to the Trades" that provides eligible workers with financial assistance to learn carpentry, plumbing, and other trades, while addressing skills gaps in the company and the wider workforce.

Other retailers like Kroger are investing in workers' skills and development, too, with new benefits for continuing education, professional certifications, and advanced degrees.

Innovation is happening all over higher education today, but it is happening in islands, pockets, and clusters.

At the end of April, about 130 “dreamers, doers, and drivers” in postsecondary education gathered at Arizona State University’s research center, EdPlus, to discuss ways of making an education beyond high school more accessible and affordable. A number of themes emerged, including the recognition of all kinds of learning through micro-credentials and creating sustainable constellations and networks of innovation.
