The United States needs an education and training system that prioritizes today’s student, who is likely to be working and parenting while trying to earn a college degree, workforce certificate, industry certification or other credential.
We need to develop a “learning currency” that values new skills however they are obtained – on the job, in the military, online, or through self-directed study. We should create opportunities that fit individual students – and at prices they can afford. Below, learn more about how Lumina advances these objectives by advocating policies that address affordability, finance, and quality assurance; by working to secure racial and economic justice; by supporting new learning pathways and models, and by working with faculty, colleges, universities, and business leaders.
What if our educational system focused on the needs of each individual? What if the system were affordable and available to people from any background or ethnicity? What if every person were allowed a chance to succeed and work toward their dreams? Read about some of these stories in Focus Magazine.
Lumina Foundation is committed to making opportunities for learning beyond high school available to all. We envision a system that is easy to navigate, delivers fair results, and meets the nation’s need for talent through a broad range of credentials. Explore these Areas of Focus to learn more about our efforts to ensure that, by 2025, 60 percent of working-age Americans have post-high school credentials that highlight their knowledge and skills, and lead to further education and employment.
