Student debt has long been a source of concern for members of the military. With approximately 200,000 servicemembers owing nearly $3 billion in student debt, policymakers and military leaders have repeatedly cited student debt as a threat to the nation’s military readiness. This report offers insight on the roadblocks that members of the military face in accessing Public Service Loan Forgiveness. The report also lays out how the Secretary of Education can utilize the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students (HEROES) Act of 2003 to ensure all servicemembers with student loans can access the protections they have earned through their service.
