Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence winner announced
Valencia College of Orlando, FL was awarded the inaugural Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. Four runners-up, or “finalists with distinction” will receive $100,000. The finalists with distinction are: Lake Area Technical Institute (Watertown, SD); Miami Dade College (Miami, FL); Walla Walla Community College (Walla Walla, WA); and West Kentucky Community and Technical College (Paducah, KY). White House Roundtable on Affordability & Productivity in Higher Education
Lumina Foundation President and CEO, Jamie Merisotis, was invited to the White House for a morning meeting with President Obama on college costs and productivity. Among those included in the meeting with the President were leaders of three state university systems, three different private nonprofit college presidents and Jane Wellman, the founder and executive director of the Delta Project on Postsecondary Costs, Productivity and Accountability—who testified in front of the House Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce with Merisotis last week. Merisotis testifies before Congressional Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training
On Wednesday, Nov. 30, Lumina President and CEO Jamie Merisotis testified before committee members to help examine the causes of rising college tuition and to discuss innovative ways some institutions are lowering costs.
